Barbering in New York

New York runs on walk-ins. In Washington Heights, Inwood and the Bronx, Dominican barbershops are open late, the music is loud, and the waiting bench is full most evenings. Clients come in, ask who is next, and decide whether to wait for their barber or take the next free chair.

Rent is the number that keeps owners up at night. A narrow storefront with six or eight chairs has to keep every chair busy, and many owners rent some chairs out to cover the lease. Knowing who has paid rent, who is behind and how many cuts each chair is doing is not a nice-to-have.

The trade here is bilingual. Spanish is the working language in many uptown and Bronx shops, while shops in Harlem, Brooklyn and Queens serve a mix of everyone. A POS that the barbers can use in Spanish, and that shows the queue on a screen everyone can see, fits the way these shops already work.

Three things that matter for New York shops

  1. #4

    Walk-in board on the wall

Put the queue on a tablet or screen by the bench. Clients see where they stand and which barber is next, which cuts the 'how long?' questions.

  2. #2

    Every chair has to pay

Reports per barber and per chair show which chairs are busy and which are not, so you can decide whether to rent a chair out.

  3. #0

    State licensing

Barbers in New York State are licensed through the Department of State. General information only: confirm current shop and license requirements with them.

Questions from New York barbers

Q01Can clients pick a barber or take the next free chair?

Yes. The walk-in queue board lets a client choose a barber or take any barber, and shows wait time for each. Barbers mark a client done and the next one moves up.

Q02Does it work in Spanish for my Dominican barbers?

Yes. Spanish is a shipped interface language. Each barber can use Spanish while you keep English for reports.

Q03What does it cost for a small Manhattan or Bronx shop?

The Full Shop plan is $39 a month for up to 10 chairs, flat. Sales tax is added where it applies. No per-barber fee and no commission on new clients.

Q04Can I rent out two chairs and keep the rest on commission?

Yes. Renters go on the booth rent ledger and commission barbers get their own commission rules. One end-of-day report covers both.

Q05How do cash tips work?

When a client pays, the tip is tied to the barber, cash or card. The nightly payout sheet shows what each barber is owed so you can settle before close.

Q06Do I need special hardware?

No. Any tablet or laptop with a browser works. Add a receipt printer, cash drawer or barcode scanner if you want them.

Q07Is a haircut taxed in New York?

Rules for services and retail products differ, and local rates apply on top of state rates. This is general information; confirm with your accountant or New York State Taxation and Finance, then set tax per item.

Q08Can I move my clients from another app?

Yes. Export your client list as a CSV and import it. Cut notes and history can be added to each client card as you go.
